6 Online Security Tips To Know This Year

We live in a world where it is quite impossible to imagine a life without computers and the internet. There is a huge amount of information that is being shared online every second of the day and data like messages, mail and pictures are sent and received by people in different parts of the world. Online shopping has also grown to a large extent resulting in huge number of financial transactions every day. Paying bills, shopping for goods, personal emails and photos and official mails are some of the things that we do online on a daily basis and it is very important that we do it securely so we do not fall victim to online fraud and theft. Here are some online security tips you should know about and follow this year to have a safe online existence.

1. Try not to use public computers for banking transactions and any other transaction that requires a credit cards

Stay away from public computers if you are making any financial transactions. They are the least safe. In case you have to use it make sure that you log out of your sessions and delete all the cookies. It is very important that you erase all possible traces of your online transactions when you are on a public computer as details left in those computers can be accessed by anyone.

2. Beware of emails that ask for your password or other sensitive details

Never give away your password or other sensitive details if you get an email asking for it. They might look very authentic but do not fall for this trap. You can easily fall prey to online fraud when you give away your online details.

3. Do not store PIN numbers and private pictures on your phone or a cloud service

You might think that saving your private pictures or your PIN number on your phone or a cloud service is safe and that it will remain anonymous but the recent i-cloud hacking scandal has proved that nothing is safe anymore. It is not only embarrassing when your photos are leaked as it can also turn dangerous if a stalker happens to find them.

4. Use a good anti-virus software and clean your computer or your phone on a regular basis

It is very important that you invest in a good anti-virus program when you are on a personal computer as well as on a work computer. Malware software is pretty harmful and you can either lose your data or be susceptible to online theft of your data. Keep clearing away stuff that you do not need and unsubscribe from sites or emails that you do not necessarily need. Do not have clutter on your computer or in your email accounts.

5. Be careful of who you befriend on social networking sites

Social networking sites are one too many and it is quite fascinating and interesting to read and make new friends. But you also need to be careful who you are becoming friends with. You cannot accept friend requests from anyone and open up your pictures to only people who you trust. Also make sure that you do not publish you travel details online as it would be easier for people to break in to your house when they know you are away.

6. Have different passwords for different sites and never have your name as a password

Most sites do not let you have your name as passwords but for sites that do let you have it, resist the temptation to use your name. It is very easy to hack into your account when you have your name as a password. Use a combination password that has no reference to your date of birth or name. Anniversary dates should also be not used.
