7 Things To Know Before Buying a Diamond

Facts That You Should Know Before Buying Diamonds

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and this has been proven a universal fact for all these years. Yes, we girls just love diamonds. What can be a better gift than these pretty looking sparkling stones, which shine like the twinkle in our eyes. Hence, you should not be cheated when you want the best. In order to prevent that, you should know some facts about diamonds before buying them.

1. Transparency of a Diamond

The purity of a diamond can be judged by how clear and transparent the diamond is. There are diamonds that have certain marks or spots that are sometimes too minor to be seen from a naked eye or rarely visible. The diamond should be as unblemished as possible. They are given various grades like Fl which stands for flawless, IF which stands for internally flawless, VVS 1&2 which stands for very very slightly imperfect, SI1 & SI2 which stands for slightly imperfect and I1,2 & 3 which stands for imperfect. So do study this before buying your glint.

2. Diamonds are measured in ‘Carats’

As the numbers of carats go on increasing, so does the value of the diamond. The price of a diamond directly varies with the number of carats i.e. the weight of the diamond. 1 carat equals 0.2 grams. Many precious stones may look the same shape or size but it is the weight that varies and makes all the difference.

3. Diamond Cuts

The cut of the diamond majorly helps in determining the way the diamond is fashioned. The cut is a major factor for the diamond to get its sparkle. The cuts of the diamonds may vary from poor, fair, good, very good and premium. The angle of the cut makes a lot of difference and so a good workmanship is required to get the best cut.

4. Color of the Diamond

A diamond that is colorless is considered to be the best diamond. Although there are some diamonds that contain some impurities or tinges of color making them slightly yellowish. They are categorized from D to Z with D being the most colorless and Z being slightly yellow.

5. Observation of the Diamond

When you go to a store to buy a diamond, the jeweler would probably place the diamond on a black paper just to entice you by enhancing its sparkling. You should view it on a white background to study its actual qualities. Do not get cheated by just following the jeweler’s instructions.

6. Diamond Certificate

Not many of you may be aware but a diamond certificate is available that mentions all the specifications about the diamond that you will be purchasing. This certificate gives all the information regarding quality, color, carats and cut. You can demand the certificate and verify the details just to be sure that you are buying an authentic piece. An AGS or GIA certificate is considered to be appropriate.

7. Diamond Prices

Do not get fooled by local dealers or stores who offer discounts on diamonds. The chances are high that they may be fooling you. A proper certification and grading should be demanded to see how genuine the dealer is and it would be best if they had an in-house jeweler to help you clarify your doubts. The normal price range for a 0.30 carat diamond of a good cut and clarity would start from about $500 and move upwards with the quality.
These are some facts that you should know and be thorough with before dashing the stores to get your sparkling solitaires. Do not forget to share this information with your husband/boyfriend too, just so that they are prepared before buying you that dazzling stone!
